Three days sailing in Lesvos

North Aegean offers a unique beauty of landscape and combines a long history, clean seas and magnificent sailing routes. The wind can be strong, usually north, but the waves are less tall compared to central Aegean Sea (Cyclades) therefore, the sea near Lesvos is a great holiday destination for sailing. This route starts and ends in Lesvos main port, Mytilene, and includes a day in the nearby island of Psara. It is suggested to be combined with plans to stay in the unique Lesvos island for a longer period; a week is the minimum needed to appreciate her beauties.

Starting from Mytilene, it takes almost 60 nautical miles toward south – southwest to get to the historic island of Psara. Beaches to anchor and swim are Kato Yalos and Katsouni, near the main port of the island. Keep in mind that the bays are exposed to south winds. In the night it is safer to berth in the port and enjoy a beautiful night in the relaxed village.

In case guests are interested, there are plenty of sightseeing in the island, as it is connected strongly with history of Greece. Homer refers to this island, as "the island that looks like a castle", and excavations revealed signs of civilization from the Mycenaean age (around 1.000 BC and after). Additionally, Psara are famous for its naval power during the 19th century and its involvement in the Greek Revolution, which caused the slaughter of all population from the Ottoman forces. This incident became famous across Europe in that era.psara

The following day the trip continues to the nearby island of Antipsara, 3-4 nm to the west. The bays there are wonderful and the south side of the island offers a good shelter to north winds. In case of different weather conditions (e.g. south or west winds) choose the corresponding side of the island. Note that the island has been included in the European Community network of protected areas NATURA2000, as a Special Protection Zone.

The last day, start the return trip early in the morning, in order to return to Mytilene port at daylight.
